Thanks for your interest in my Workshops and Lectures. I do workshops for guilds, shops and retreats. Many of my workshops are technique based and I always cover color and fabric choices. Color and Inspiration in Quilt Surface Design
This slide lecture and mini trunk show by New Hampshire quilt artist Mimi Winder presents a wide range of quilt colors and themes. Take the mystery out of color terminology by seeing quilts that use various color strategies. You will be inspired to put theory into practice as you view the quilts in this show!


Layers of Love - A Quiltmaker's Legacy
This is an inspiring trunk show of New Hampshire quilt artist Mimi Winder. The quilts span her more than 20 years as a quiltmaker and show a transition in quilting styles from traditional to more contemporary exploration. She will share not only her own quilts but those made by family members including her grandmother's 1930's quilts. The culmination of the show will be a sharing of your layers of love. You are encouraged to bring your family quilts to share as time permits.


Template Free Tricks and Setting Solutions
This lecture/demo will cover template free techniques using a rotary cutter and ruler. Take the mystery out of how to cut simple shapes for classic quilt blocks using NO TEMPLATES -- and how to make the pieces fit! Learn how to change the size of your block without all that pesky drafting. Techniques for adding borders and lattice strips that will eliminate wavy edges and methods for basting your quilts for machine or hand quilting will be shown. And finally, a trunk show that will inspire you to use these techniques to create your own unique masterpiece quilts.

Borders, Basting and Binding - Get it Done!
This is the workshop that ties up loose ends. Techniques for adding borders and lattice strips that will eliminate wavy edges and methods for basting your quilts for machine or hand quilting will be covered. And finally, learn how to attach a continuous straight binding. This workshop is designed to answer the most asked questions in quilting workshops. Bring your quilts in various stages of completion for a hands on workshop.


Choosing Fabric for your Quilts
Are you overwhelmed by the fabric choices available? Do you want to try something new but just don't quite know how? This is the class for you. We will look at fabric selections for quilts and see why some choices work and some don't. Take a challenge to break into new fabrics and color palettes. This is a process class, no sewing just fabric and fun.


Friendship Star Block - (Rotary Basics & More)
Half Square Triangles, Quarter Square Triangles -- What are they? This informative workshop is a must for anyone wanting to take the mystery out using a rotary cutter for template free quilt block construction. You will learn how to properly use your rotary set-up (rotary cutter, ruler and mat) to cut strips and to calculate sizes for cutting squares and triangles. Learn to cut and sew a simple star in a choice of sizes which can become the start of a charming wall or baby quilt. (Note: this class is available in a 1/2 day version)

The flying geese unit is a versatile design, not just for a quilt but also for borders and lattices! Learn quick and easy ways to create the basic flying geese unit. Then explore a variety of ways to make the geese fly! This is a great class for the quiltmaker who wants to perfect their rotary cutting and machine piecing skills. Fabric and color choices will also be covered and fabric sharing will be encouraged. Template free rotary cutting instructions will be provided.


Variable Star
This is a great pattern for an easy and fast quilt. Learn template free techniques to create the traditional (and easy) Variable Star block. You will also learn to make the Flying Geese units for a great border for this striking quilt. This class is for the quiltmaker who wants to perfect their rotary cutting and machine piecing skills. Fabric and color choices will also be covered and fabric sharing will be encouraged. Template free rotary cutting instructions will be provided.


Jacob's Ladder Fish
Come piece this colorful fish based on a traditional Jacob's Ladder block. You will learn how to rotary cut the pieces and assemble this original quilt design. Try using fun bright fabrics or batiks for a tropical look. This quilt makes a wonderful baby quilt or wall hanging. Pattern and template free instructions will be provided.


LeMoyne Star
This 8 pointed star is a wonderful pattern for a quilt with lots of movement and depth. Learn how to rotary cut 45 degree diamonds and machine piece the dreaded Y-seam (set in piecing). It's really easy once you know the tricks! The basic units can also be used in borders to create a wonderful ribbon effect. A variety of sizes for the block will be shown. Choose 1 size or make all 3 for your own unique quilt. Template free rotary cutting instructions will be provided.


Batik Diamonds
Have fun combining all those great fabrics you have been collecting into this easy and unique quilt. The 60 degree diamond is the basis for quilts such as tumbling blocks and the 6 pointed star. Learn how to roatary cut this shape and get some tips on accurate piecing. Template free rotary cutting instructions will be provided.


Cutting Curves from Straight Pieces
You will not believe how easy it is to cut these free form arcs! Template-free, rotary cut, machine stitched and very achievable, this fun project provides a good way to use some of your fabric collection. The pattern and technique is from the book, "Cutting Curves from Straight Pieces" by Debbie Bowles.


String Piecing
This is a fun scrap quilt to use up all you adds and ends. Bring your scraps and learn this quick and easy method to create new fabric yardage, then choose from a variety of options to create your blocks. Use up you fabric scraps or this is a great excuse to create some!


Intermediate Quiltmaking-Curved Piecing
Intermediate quiltmaking will introduce more challenging patterns and techniques in quilt surface design. The theme for this series will be curved piecing in quilt design. Various techniques will be covered using templates for traditional blocks as well as for freely drawn original designs. Techniques for creating curves without the use of templates will also be covered.


Tricky Triangles
Triangles are everywhere in quilt designs. Learn lots of different techniques to cut and piece half square triangles. Then design an original quilt with pieces made in class. This is a great class to use up scraps for a fabulous quilt. The workshop will cover the basics for combining a large variety of fabrics for a great scrap look.


Scrap Bag Fun (Split 9-Patch)
Have a blast making this scrappy quilt using easy to cut and piece squares and triangles. We will be cutting both shapes from the same strips making this a great way to use up some of your stash. Bring your wildest fabrics -- everything works with this pattern. Fabric and color choices will also be covered and fabric sharing will be encouraged. Template free rotary instructions will be provided.


Flannel Fun
Make this fast and easy quilt designed especially for using the great flannels that are now available. The simple and graphic design makes it easy to combine a wide variety of fabrics. This cozy quilt will be a favorite for cold winter evenings. Template free instructions will be provided.


Circles and Curves (Drunkard
Circles and Curves Curved piecing adds a great dimension to quilt design. This easy block can be arranged in a variety of ways to create unique quilts and borders. Students will learn how to draft the traditional pattern and make templates or choose to use some of the acrylic sets available.


Color and Design Workshops



Crazy Log Cabin - Improvisational Piecing
Have fun and loosen up by making this fun and free quilt. There is no precision cutting and piecing here. This method will allow you to experiment and work with many fabrics to design a unique quilt very quickly. We will explore ways to change your blocks on the fly to create dynamic movement in your quilt.


Value of Color Play
Value, the degree of lightness or darkness in a color, can be a key element in quilt design. Learn how to use value to create movement and luminosity in quilt surface design. Starting with simple flying geese blocks and a controlled color palette, we will explore a variety of possibilities and effects to create unique and dynamic quilts.


Tetris Tessellation
Tessellate: to arrange squares in a checkered or mosaic pattern. If you've ever seen the computer game Tetris, you know it would make a great quilt. Come learn how to work with tessellation's based on this simple pattern. Experiment with ways to combine lots of fabrics to bring out the tessellated design. This is a fun and easy quilt to construct using rotary cutting and machine piecing. Kids and computer geeks love this quilt.


Great American Scrap Quilt
Learn techniques for combining a wide variety of fabrics, textures and color to create an original scrap quilt. You will gain confidence to expand your fabric choices and make many fabrics work successfully! Appropriate pattern choices for scrap quilts will be covered. Individual growth and creativity will be encouraged. Sewing Experience: Students should be comfortable with basic quilt construction techniques.


Value in Quilt Surface Design
Working with only shades of gray we will learn the importance of value in quilt surface design. Exercises will explore the impact of value in design. Students will leave the workshop with a new understanding of how to use value to create dynamic quilts. You will have several design approaches which may become the basis for future pieces. No sewing required.


Basic Quilting
Create an original pieced quilt composed of two alternating block patterns. This course will cover concepts in fabric choice including color, value, texture, pattern and scale. You will learn how to draft patterns and create templates; how to cut the fabric blocks from templates as well as accurate piecing techniques. Template free rotary cutting techniques will also be covered. Finishing, hand quilting and binding the quilt will be included. This is a great class not only for the beginning student but also for the quiltmaker who want so "fill in the gaps" in their quiltmaking knowledge.


Start Quilting Series #1
Start Quilting Series #1 It's time to learn to quilt! In this class students will learn the basic skills of quiltmaking from A-Z as they construct a charming rail fence wall hanging. Students will be using "Start Quilting With Alex Anderson" and will learn about rotary cutting, piecing, borders, quilting, binding and labeling as they discover the wonderful world of quilting.


Garden Path (Yellow Brick Road)
This pattern is a great way to use fat quarters. I started with a Portsmouth Fabric "fatpac" of Kaffe Fasset florals, but you can use any of your favorite fabrics from you fat quarter stash to make this simple rotary cut quit.


Start Quilting Series #2
Start Quilting Series #2 Ready for something just a bit more challenging than the Rail Fence, but not ready to venture out on your own? This is the perfect class for your second quilt, or if you have already quilted a little and need more instruction or some confidence-building. Using just two simple blocks- squares and half-square triangles - you'll create a series of four-pointed starts as you learn to stitch bias edges.
